This class is the starting point for 90% of our adult students. In this class you will be exposed to an overview of "Tactical thinking and living", you will be exposed to the basics of carrying and using a gun or other weapon for self defense and get some basic experience shooting several different guns (provided by the school). This is the perfect opportunity to begin building your knowledge base and will give you the building blocks that will form the foundation of all of your tactical training in the future. This class will also give you enough information to see which avenues of education you would like to further pursue. Highly recommended as a starting point for all students. Please see Concealed Carry to get a lot more information about this class.

Tactical Handgun 2 day
A continuation of the Introduction to Tactical Handgun course. You will experience more situations of a deeper depth with the emphasis on the basics. The most experienced and qualified shooters know and understand that the basics are the cornerstones of everything. In this class you will run the basics repeatedly as you begin to teach yourself to run on automatic pilot. When the chips are down and your life is on the line you must be able to take immediate action. The time you take trying to decide what to do, and how to do it can be deadly. In this class you will take all the skills you started to learn in the Introduction to Tactical Handgun or the Concealed Carry class and develop them and build on them. More topics will be introduced including shooting in low light, working with a partner or team, and shooting from different body positions.
- Equipment required: Handgun, properly fitting belt holster, minimum of 3 magazines or speed loaders, belt pouch for 2 magazines or speed loaders, a "tactical" flashlight, eye and ear protection and personal items as noted below.

Introduction to Tactical Carbine
The tactical carbine, a weapon far superior to any handgun for self preservation will be discussed in this class. The carbine as used by the US military forces is a compact lightweight rifle known as the M-16. The civilian version is usually known as the AR-15. This class is intended for those that have a carbine and have never had any safety / tactical / operational training, or those who long ago had the basic military training and want a refresher. It is not a combat assault course. You will not be crawling around in the mud under barbed wire or making SWAT type entries on buildings. SAFETY is one of the key principals you will learn and all procedures taught will be geared toward safety, reliability and realistic usability. You will learn the proper way to run this gun, keep it operating and how to use it in a self defensive situation. You will also learn weapon transitions - switching from the carbine to your pistol and when it is appropriate to do so.
- Equipment required: Carbine or "sub gun" (M16, AR15 type recommended - AR10, M1A, Mini 14, AK47, MP5 type acceptable) minimum of 3 carbine magazines (4-6 recommended), some type of sling for the carbine (Specter SOP sling HIGHLY recommended, see our links page for more info), Some kind of "holder" for at least 2 carbine magazines on your person, (Specter Thigh Rig is an excellent choice, again, see the links page). Note: If bringing a full auto, select-fire, short barreled, or suppressed weapon, please be sure to bring a copy of your stamp!
- Handgun: (Optional for all, but recommended, especially if you have had prior handgun training) properly fitting belt holster, (see personal items below) 3 magazines or speed loaders, belt pouch for 2 magazines or speed loaders, eye and ear protection and personal items as noted below.
- Ammunition required: Carbine: 500-750 rounds - Handgun: 100 rounds
- Class length: 8 hours (with a short lunch break)
- Class Fee: $150

Introduction to Tactical Shotgun
The tactical shotgun, a weapon far superior to any handgun and arguably superior to the carbine in many situations is the topic of this course of instruction. Typically, a short barreled shotgun (18" minimum for most civilians). Most people seem to prefer a Remington 870 for this type of use but many other brands and types are used as well. This class is intended for those that have a shotgun and have never had any safety / tactical / operational training, or those who long ago had the basic military training and want a refresher. You will also learn weapon transitions - switching from the shotgun to your pistol and when it is appropriate to do so. Additionally you will learn something unique to shotgunning, how to pattern your particular shotgun and how to select the proper ammunition for it. You will learn that this weapon platform is far more versatile and useful than you ever imagined.
- Equipment required: Shotgun (870 type recommended, most others will work as well). Some type of sling for the shotgun (Specter SOP sling HIGHLY recommended, see our links page for more info
- Handgun: (Optional for all, but recommended, especially if you have had prior handgun training) properly fitting belt holster, (see personal items below) 3 magazines or speed loaders, belt pouch for 2 magazines or speed loaders, eye and ear protection and personal items as noted below.
- Ammunition required: Shotgun: 50-75 rounds of buckshot, 25-50 slugs, 250-300 rounds of bird shot - Handgun: 100 rounds
- Class length: 8 hours (with a short lunch break)
- Class Fee: $150

Ladies Only Classes
Either the Concealed Carry or the Introduction to Tactical Handgun course can be done as a class where all of the students are ladies. We have found (through persona experience if nothing else) that it is very difficult for a spouse to teach their loved one skills such as shooting, driving a stick shift car, riding a motorcycle and other similar tasks involving physical coordination, physical manipulation of equipment and so forth. We offer these ladies only classes because it gives the ladies an opportunity to be in an environment where there are no husbands or other male significant others around to make you nervous and impinge on your ability to learn. There are no macho attitudes to deal with and all of the other students in the class are having the same problems you are. Working through the problems of gun manipulation and operation as a class and asking any questions can be done without the fear of looking bad in front of, or taking static from, "the guys" because there are no guys! At the conclusion of these classes the ladies often shoot better than their husbands!
- Equipment, ammunition, prerequisites, class length and cost are identical for these classes as for the "regular" version of the same class.
- Class size: Minimum 3 students, maximum 5 students.

Glock Maintenance
This course will be instructed by a Certified Glock Armorer.
In this class you will learn how to completely disassemble your Glock pistol. You will remove every single removable part from the gun. You will clean and inspect the parts and then reassemble them back into a working firearm. This is not nearly as hard as it sounds. All you need is a few very basic and inexpensive tools.
Complete disassembly is not required for normal routine cleaning of this pistol. However, being able to do it occasionally is a very good thing. With these skills you will be able to do such things as change your trigger pull with factory parts, change the slide release to the extended type, and as you shoot the pistol you will be able to clean all the nooks and crannies and maintain it in a like new condition.
After all of this you will go to the range and test fire your Glock to insure that all is well and the gun is good to go.
This class will run about 3-5 hours depending on the number of students and how quickly everyone becomes comfortable with the process.
This is a fun and easy class and you get to learn about your gun and how it works. By being able to really clean and maintain your Glock and change parts as they become worn you will easily save the cost of tuition.
- Equipment required: A Glock handgun and magazine
- Ammunition required: 10 rounds (Bring more if you would like to shoot some after the class)
- Class length: 3-5 hours (with a short lunch break if needed)
- Class Fee: $75

You will clean and inspect the parts and then reassemble them back into a working firearm. This is not nearly as hard as it sounds. All you need is a few very basic and inexpensive tools, a vise and a couple clamping fixtures.
Complete disassembly is not required for normal routine cleaning of this weapon. However, being able to do it occasionally is a very good thing. With these skills you will be able to do such things as inspect and repair or replace worn and or broken parts, worn or broken parts, replace your preban barrel with a "no ban" barrel (parts available through the school! - with advance notice). And as you shoot the rifle you will be able to clean all the nooks and crannies and maintain it in a like new condition.
After all of this you will go to the range and test fire your AR to insure that all is well and the gun is good to go.
This class will run about 4-6 hours depending on the number of students and how quickly everyone becomes comfortable with the process.
This is a fun and easy class and you get to learn about your gun and how it works. By being able to really clean and maintain your AR and change parts as they become worn you will easily save the cost of tuition.
- Equipment required: An AR-15 or legal M-16 and magazine
- Ammunition required: 10 rounds (Bring more if you would like to shoot some after the class)
- 4 "Dummy rounds": The red plastic snap caps work well (with advance notice these can be provided to the student at a reasonable cost)
- Class length: 4-6 hours (with a short lunch break if needed)
- Class Fee: $75
NOTE: For this class you can either bring a fully assembled working gun or a box of parts you have gathered that can be assembled into a working rifle. It is not uncommon for students to get one of the various AR kits on the market and bring it to class to learn how to put it all together. I have the vises and special tools needed for this. CAUTION: If you bring parts to be assembled into a gun, be sure you bring ALL the parts needed! Also: All NFA rules apply!

Family Classes
Family and kids classes are the real reason for Rimfire Ranch. This is where we get the opportunity to bring new people into the shooting lifestyle. It gives us an opportunity to teach SAFETY and good gun handling to family members and kids that otherwise might never have the exposure to it.
All family classes are custom tailored to the individual family during discussion with the family leaders (Mom and Dad) beforehand. As with all of our classes safety is paramount and will be stressed at all times. Most family classes are designed as a fun activity for the entire family with children's ages being in the 7-12 year old range and up to children of adult age. These classes are ideal for families where guns are already in, or about to be, in the home. Typically, it is Dad that hunts and has guns and wants Mom and the kids to know and understand a bit about what guns are, how they work and how to be safe with them. However, this is by no means the only kind of family classes. Single Mom's with children find these classes invaluable as well.
As a family you can be introduced to the entire array of firearms and the shooting sports in general. Various aspects of target shooting, competitive shooting, hunting and self defense are discussed.
All students will have ample opportunities to shoot a variety of guns from small to large, handgun, rifles and shotguns. Weapons can be provided by the school or weapons already owned by the family may be (and are encouraged to be!) used. Sessions are kept short with frequent breaks to accommodate the shorter attention spans of the younger students.
For families with children ages under 7 a portion of the class can (and should be!) be set up to teach the Eddie Eagle safety program. The Eddie Eagle program is a national program set up by the NRA to teach kids what to do when they encounter a gun of any kind. There is an entertaining "Sesame Street" type video that the kids enjoy and while watching learn the message; "Stop, don't touch, leave the area, tell an adult."
A topic of great concern for many families that have both children and guns is storage. Different methods of storage are discussed and some of the merits and determinants of each are learned. You will learn that, properly done, both children and guns can live in the same household.
Rather than limiting the shooting to just paper targets we have several different reactive metal targets that when you hit them, they move. This provides instant gratification to both children and adults alike! Additional fun and a more casual attitude can be introduced with some traditional "tin can" shooting.
Family classes can range from a casual and rather informal day of safety and shooting to discussions of and shooting exercises in, home security, counter home invasion tactics, family team tactics and more. This all depends on the ages and maturity of the students and the wishes of the family leaders. Family classes are always flexible and at the discretion of the instructors and family leaders may take a variety of deviations from the initially planned activities.
Overall, the family classes are as varied as the families that take them. The goal of most family classes is to teach safety, some basic gun handling and shooting and to have lots of fun while doing it. Often, these classes will lead to other more in-depth classes for one or more of the members of the family.
- Equipment required: Varies - As noted above, everything can be supplied by the school, but if you already have some equipment by all means, bring it.
- Ammunition required: Again, this varies and will be determined in the class planning session with the family leaders.
- Class length: 8 hours (with a lunch break)
- Class Fee: Really varies! This can range from $200 for a single parent with up to 2 children shooting to over $500 for Mom, Dad and several children shooting with the school providing all guns and ammunition. Please contact for more information and specific pricing
Please note: If you do the math and include the cost of ammunition, you will quickly see that family or kids classes do not make money for the school. In fact, usually they cost us to put on. However, we feel strongly that a family educated in the basics of shooting is likely to continue to be involved and go further with their shooting education. Also, we enjoy teaching kids and understand that kids are the future of the "sport". Further, a child given the basics of gun ownership and given a sense of self preservation will be a lot better off as they grow and start going out on dates and driving and moving out to college. Also, important to the school owners and staff is that hopefully the family will go out and be a positive representation of gun owners in America and will vote accordingly.

Kids Classes
Similar to the "Family Classes", the kids classes are custom tailored the students with input of the parents and what direction they want the training to take. Kids classes are often very small, frequently just 1 or 2 students. These classes are designed to entertain and teach the kids at the same time. Safety rules are learned and strictly adhered to but fun is also stressed. Kids need both guidelines/rules and fun and every attempt is made to provide both. Classes such as these make great rewards for children having gotten good grades in school, birthday and Christmas presents and so forth. Theses classes are not baby-sitting sessions and at least 1 parent is required to remain on the range premises at all times with their child to observe the class. Eddie Eagle gun safety classes for very young children provided FREE to the child, grandchild, or sibling of any student!
- Equipment required: Varies - As noted above, (in the family class description) everything can be supplied by the school, but if you already have some equipment by all means, bring it.
- Ammunition required: Again, this varies and will be determined in the class planning session with the parents.
- Class length: 5 - 8 hours (with a lunch break)
- Class Fee: $100 - $300
- Contact the school for more information on class length and fees.

Very Young Kids Classes
For parents (and Grandparents!) that recognize that even though they may not have any guns in the house, or parents that keep their guns secured, their child may be at a friends house, school or elsewhere and come across a gun and want to teach their child what to do. Guns do occasionally "magically appear". One such instance was in the fall of 2003 when an off duty Deputy was attending an elementary school play and his weapon became dislodged from its holster and fell to the floor. The deputy was not aware of this and left the building. One of the small students found it, and thanks to the Eddie Eagle gun safety training he had gotten he did not touch it, he left the area and went directly to a teacher and told them. As in the kids classes a parent is required to stay with their child. Note: If bringing a student to this class while also bringing a student to the "Kids Class" please make arrangements to have the young student picked up after they are done. This will prevent serious distractions of the kids in their class.
- Equipment required: None
- Ammunition required: None - this is a non-shooting class
- Class length: About 45 minutes
- Class Fee: $20 - Free to the child, grandchild or sibling of any Rimfire Ranch student. Also free to the child or grandchild of any Public School Teacher/Administrator, Police Officer, Firefighter, EMS professional, and all non-physician Health Care Workers.
- Class size: up to 10 kids
- Contact the school to arrange a class.

Gun / Equipment Rental
Rimfire Ranch has equipment that can be made available for rent to students. If you are new to shooting and do not have the required "stuff." Top quality, excellent condition guns, holsters, magazines, magazine pouches, eye and ear protection are available. Please contact us for details and costs of this. It is preferred that the student has their own equipment (for all except the CCW class). However, we offer this service because we understand that sometimes, especially with new shooters, you may not have everything you need, but you still want to learn, and we try to do what we can to help you in that effort. ADVANCE ARRANGEMENTS for rentals are MANDATORY.

A note on required personal equipment
Personal equipment as appropriate to the individual. Things to keep in mind are:
- The weather - Most lecture material is done inside an air-conditioned classroom but all gun handling and shooting is done outside. Dress accordingly and BRING SUNSCREEN. Rain gear may be appropriate as well. We conduct classes and shoot Rain or Shine.
- A hat - The most commonly worn hat is the classic "ball cap" with a bill. This helps keep hot brass out of your face. Will also help keep the sun out of your eyes.
- Shoes - NO sandals, flip-flops or slip on shoes. All footwear must be close toe, fit properly and be in good condition. Hiking, outdoor or work boots are ideal but not mandatory.
- Shirt - Brass ejected from a gun is HOT. A shirt that has a very loose collar or (for ladies especially) is low cut in the front can act as a funnel and catch HOT brass. You are advised to wear a shirt that will help prevent this. Regular "T-shirts" work very well for this. Use your own discretion.
- Food - The range is located in the country. There is an Arby's about 15 minutes away, (they feature VERY slow service). This is the only food close by. Lunch break is usually only 30 minutes. Most students bring a sandwich lunch and a snack or two for the breaks.
- Drink - Classes are outside. We are in central Florida, it is HOT. Bring LOTS to drink. Hydration is essential. Sodas are fine but the bulk of your liquid intake should be water or sports drinks. It should go without saying, NO ALCHOLIC beverage of any kind is permitted on the range.
- Gun "stuff" - Ear and eye protection are mandatory at all times while on the range, bring what works for you (provided for the Concealed Carry class ONLY). electronic ear muffs are highly recommended to allow you to both hear the instructors range commands and to preserve your hearing. Walmart has a decent functional pair for about $99. Bring any spare parts and tools you feel you may need for your particular gun and equipment. This includes (where appropriate) batteries, bulbs, magazine loading tools, sight adjustment tool, anything you feel you might need during a class.
- Holsters - For all shooting classes a proper fitting, made for your particular model of gun, strong side (no cross draw) BELT holster is mandatory, (inside the waist band is OK but should be of the design that will stay open when the gun is removed allowing for 1 hand reholstering). Thigh rigs are acceptable only if you are a member of a tactical team and will be wearing a thigh rig on call outs. All others must have a belt holster or special prior permission. We recommend either leather or Kydex holsters made for your specific gun. The one size fits all (usually nylon) holsters never fit anything well and are dangerous and will not be permitted in class.
- Magazine pouches - should be stiff enough to allow for a smooth rapid draw and easy replacement. The "generic" nylon pouches are not preferable but will work in an absolute pinch. As with the holsters, quality proper fitting leather or Kydex pouches are much preferred. Good quality, professional gear is worth the cost, especially when your life depends on it. See my links page for some quality sources for holsters and mag pouches.
- Ammunition - In the classes where a quantity of ammunition is listed, you are encouraged to bring more than the listed ammount. Consider that as a minimum quantity. If the class is going well and things are flowing smoothly it is entirely possible we may be able to shoot as much as 50% more than the listed minimum. It is always better to have more and take it home than to run out!
